While the number of women in science and engineering fields has doubled over the past two decades, they still only account for 28 percent of workers in these occupations. Discouraged? You shouldn't be. These women are proof that the future (of STEM) is female. Below are some of the hottest innovations in everything from space to software from the women of the Forbes 30 Under 30, in 30 words or less.

ELIZABETH ASAI

Cofounder, 3Derm Systems | 27

Yale alum raised $3.9 million for her invention: 3-D imaging system for primary care doctors to take diagnostic-quality pictures to send to dermatologists for review, no appointment necessary.

LEA VON BIDDER

Cofounder, Ava Science | 28

Investors put $42 million into Swiss native's fertility-tracking bracelet, which tells women when they're likeliest to conceive. Tracker data shows it has "enabled" some 10,000 pregnancies since it debuted.

RACHEL BENYOLA

Founder, AnneeLondon | 30

Philadelphia-based designer invented a collapsible, origami-inspired (but strong!) bicycle helmet for easy transport and storage. The patent-pending noggin guard has 3,500 preorders at $190 a pop.

CATHY TIE

Cofounder, Ranomics | 22

Thiel Fellow raised $1.3 million to construct a database of rare genetic variations and associated disease risk. She is also a partner at Palo Alto-based VC firm Cervin Ventures.

AMBER YANG

Founder, Seer Tracking | 19

Stanford undergrad's program tracks space debris, predicting when it might endanger satellites and spacecraft. With 98% accuracy, the software she built is said to be more accurate than NASA's models.

ANNIE CHEUNG

Cofounder, Noon Home | 28

The Salt Lake City native's smart-lighting app swaps switches and dimmers for automatic adjustments based on time and user preference. Cheung has raised $58 million.

IBA MASOOD

Cofounder, Tara A.I. | 28

Artificial-intelligence software matches freelance coders with well-suited programming gigs. Masood has raised $3 million; the Y Combinator grad counts Ford, Cisco and Orange Telecom among her clients.
