Energy Leadership is both a form of leadership and the actual process of using your energy in a way that works for you rather than against you. The 7 Levels of Energy represent our emotions, the intentions and belief system behind them, and how we lead our people.
As you review the 7 Levels of Energy, consider your leadership style as you experience these different types of energy, and ask yourself:
- Which styles make me most effective as a leader?
- Which styles make me the least effective as a leader?
2. Energy Leadership
Energy Leadership is both a
form of leadership and the
actual process of using your
energy in a way that works for
you rather than against you.
Learning to use your energy
effectively changes how you
experience life, at work and
home, and the types of
experiences you bring to those
who interact with you.
3. 7 Levels of Energy
As you review the 7 Levels of Energy, consider your leadership style as you
experience these different types of energy, and ask yourself:
• Which styles make me most effective as a leader?
• Which styles make me the least effective as a leader?
4. Level 1: Victim
When you feel like a victim
you don’t take action because
you can’t focus or figure out
what to do. You may:
• Avoid difficult tasks or stall.
• Feel like a weight is on your
shoulders.
• Feel powerless and unable
to change.
• Lack initiative or motivation
• Hide back instead of sticking
your neck out there.
• Say that “This is just the way
it is. Why even bother?
5. Level 2: Conflict
You may experience conflict
because of the amount of
responsibility you have, or
because you feel like you know
better. You may:
• Delegate by telling people
exactly what to do.
• Force your agenda and not
listen to input from others.
• Hoard information.
• Say, “Just do it my way,
okay? I don’t have time to
explain why.”
6. Level 3:
Responsibility
When you experience Level 3
energy you take responsibility
for your actions. You may:
• Find ways to cope with the
amount of responsibility you
have.
• Have an “I win; and if you
win too, that’s great”
attitude.
• Like some cooperation, but
put one party’s interest
above the other (company
above employees or vice
versa.)
• Say, “It’s the right thing to
do.”
7. Level 4: Service
When you experience Level 4 energy
you truly care for your employees and
help them do their jobs the best they
can. You may:
• Lead from the heart, not the head.
• Be motivated to be liked, rather
than for being productive.
• Put employee interests first and
then meet the company’s needs.
• Share a lot of information.
• Say, “I’ll do it.”
Remember to look after your well-
being as you support others.
8. Level 5: Opportunist
When you experience Level 5 energy you
know how to make the most out of
situations. You may:
• Find opportunities to grow in all
challenges.
• Be solution-focused and action-
oriented.
• Share decision making for projects with
your team.
• Be trusting, honest, and forthright
because you look for decisions that
meet the interests of everyone.
• See situations as moving forward for the
business, customers, or employees.
Don’t spread yourself too thin by
taking on too much responsibility.
9. Level 6:
Intuitive
When you experience
Level 6 energy you
trust your intuition.
You may:
• See yourself in your
team members.
• Share information
and trust your
instincts and the
instincts of your
team.
Stay grounded so that you don’t
appear out out touch to your team.
10. Level 7: Creator
Level 7 is not often referenced
in business settings, but when
you experience it personally,
you can:
• Use all the other energy
levels at will.
• Be a creator, participant, and
observer of your life at the
same time, which makes you
a powerful person.
Stay grounded so that you don’t
appear out out touch to your team.
