Primavera P6 Enterprise Project Portfolio Management Release 16.1 and above comes in two views: Classic and Standard. How do you set your P6 default view preferences to work in the Classic view?
Oracle are moving away from Java in Primavera P6 EPPM, but it does not yet have enough features in its Standard view to warrant the removal of the Classic view. This leaves schedulers having to perform some functions in the Standard view and other older functions in the Classic view.
I find the Classic view of Primavera P6 EPPM release 16.1 more suitable for creating schedules. The reoccurring somewhat annoying problem I kept having was that P6 EPPM would always revert back to the standard view when I really wanted to work in the Classic view. Fortunately, there’s a preference setting in P6 EPPM that makes the Classic view the default.
This article demonstrates a quick tip on how to make the Classic view in Primavera P6 EPPM release 16.1 the default view for creating a schedule.
Making the Classic view the default view is all about knowing where to look. First go to My Preferences, Figure 1, in P6 EPPM.
Figure 1
My preferences has three tabs. Select the view tab, Figure 2.

Here is where it gets interesting. In the projects preferences click on the Pages twisty arrow, Figure 3.

In this drop down EPS menu, Figure 4, you will find the toggle to make either the Classic view or the Standard view the default.

Well, I still like the Classic view, so I set the Classic view has the default for EPS pages. Great! But we are not done yet. Click on the Activities twisty arrow to find the default settings for activities. Again, I like working in the Classic view so I set the activity default view to Classic, Figure 5.

Summary
With each release, we continue to see Primavera P6 EPPM moving away from Java. But it is not yet complete. Some of the features in the old views are still essential, like the import/export feature that is missing in Standard view of P6 EPPM (in release 16.1).
In this stage of in-between development, schedulers must decide which view to work in. Fortunately, Primavera P6 EPPM has preference settings to make your view of choice the default go to view.
