Danny Houghton will make history when he next takes to the field for a competitive match in a Hull FC shirt.

The Black and Whites co-captain fractured his wrist over the final weeks of the Super League season and as a result missed the last two games of the year against Wigan Warriors and Wakefield Trinity.

Had Houghton played in those games he would have surpassed Richard Horne’s appearance record in the summer era.

Horne made 387 appearances in all competitions over his 16 seasons in the Black and Whites first-team fold between his debut in 1999 and his retirement in 2014 at the age of 32.

As such, he has held the record for some time, sitting marginally behind the likes of Eddie Caswell, Brian Hancock and Ivor Watts in the club’s all-time appearance charts.

However, he will soon be overtaken by Houghton, who is now just one behind Horne, with 386 to his name.

The hooker will hope to be fit for the start of the Super League season and if he is, the club’s first game will see him become the club’s joint top appearance maker in modern times and he’ll take the record outright the following week, should he play that is.

Houghton will still be some way behind Edward Rogers, who tops the leader board having made 500 outings in a Hull shirt at the start of the 20th century.

In surpassing Horne, though, he would enter the top 10 and he’ll hope to climb a little higher over the course of next season.
